Can you get DHEA from food?

No. There is nothing you can eat or drink to increase the DHEA level in the body. In this article we explore what DHEA is and how to maintain healthy DHEA levels as we get older. Can you eat or drink foods that will increase your DHEA? Unfortunately, you cannot get DHEA from food.

DHEA: The Base Hormone

DHEA, or dehydroepiandrosterone, is a naturally occurring abundant prohormone that the body produces primarily in the adrenal glands, gonads and the dermis. It serves as a precursor to other smaller carbon chain hormones like the estrogenic and androgenic hormones like testosterone. DHEA supports the immune system and cardiovascular health as well as cognitive function and quality of sleep. DHEA has a variety of beneficial health functions. Unfortunately, DHEA levels cannot be increased or decreased from the foods we eat.

Can you get DHEA from Food ?

No food or drink can change DHEA levels.

You may have heard that “bioidentical” hormones like DHEA are chemically synthesized from wild yams. That is true.

Actually, a chemical called diosgenine is made from wild yams; and diosgenine is used in a chemical laboratory to make the specific carbon chain molecule needed, such as the estrogen molecules, like estradiol, or estrone as well as testosterone or progesterone, or DHEA. So though the chemicals that are needed to make DHEA in a chemical manufacturing facility are sourced from wild yams, your body does not get more DHEA from eating wild yams.

Why Food Won’t Increase Your DHEA Levels

Unfortunately, there is no known fruit, or vegetable or special fat or protein you can eat that would increase your DHEA levels. Though you can eat wild yams and they are a very healthy food with many excellent nutrients, the digestive tract will simply digest the protein molecules in it.

In fact, this is also one of the problems with taking DHEA as a pill supplement rather than using it as a DHEA supplement cream: it is a very large 19 carbon chain molecule, and it therefore gets digested and destroyed in the gut or the DHEA immediately gets filtered out by the first pass effect of the liver.

So you cannot improve your DHEA levels by simply eating or drinking some particular food. The best way to use DHEA is to use it as a properly made absorbable skin cream rather than a pill. Absorbable DHEA delivered by a special coconut oil base cream.

DHEA Cream: A Better Choice Than Pills

If you’re looking to enhance your DHEA levels, using a DHEA cream like Twist 25 can be a more effective option than taking oral supplements. This is because oral supplements are destroyed in the stomach or filtered out by the liver.

Twist 25 DHEA cream provides bioidentical DHEA exactly the same molecule as what is produced in the body. The cream is applied on the skin, the dermis, our largest organ, is where DHEA is naturally metabolized. Within a few weeks of using Twist 25 cream, you’ll start to feel noticeable subtle benefits. Taking DHEA as a pill isn’t as effective because the liver eliminates most of it.

Understanding Why Food Won’t Increase DHEA

There are three primary reasons why DHEA doesn’t increase when ingested through food:

Reason #1: Liver Filtration

When you take DHEA orally, such as in pill form, your liver filters out most of it. What does increase slightly is DHEA-S (DHEA sulfate) rather than free DHEA. Free DHEA is the precursor or base from which sex hormones are produced. DHEA is a foundation or precursor to 50 smaller more specific carbon chain molecules. Hormones are the protein drivers that make us function.

Reason #2: DHEA-S vs. DHEA

DHEA-S is not the same as DHEA. Medical research findings show that the body cannot convert DHEA-S into DHEA. DHEA can be converted into DHEA-S; but not the other way. This fact is confirmed by medical research study done by Dr. Fabien Hammer.

Reason #3: Skin Absorption

Research shows that our skin, also known as the dermis, is where most DHEA, a hormone, turns into different smaller hormones. This shows us that Twist 25 DHEA cream, which contains DHEA identical to that produced naturally in our bodies, is easily absorbed by the skin, where it can be most effective.

On top of that, DHEA is good for your skin. It helps produce sebum, boosts collagen formation, and defends skin cells against damage from UV rays and chemical carcinogens. Especially for postmenopausal women, DHEA, an inactive adrenal steroid precursor, locally produces all estrogens and about half of the androgens in men.

What Does DHEA Do?

Primarily, DHEA serves as a fundamental hormonal precursor. Additionally, DHEA fortifies the immune system by increasing both the quantity and function of natural killer (NK) cells. An inadequate DHEA level is frequently linked to numerous age-related diseases, such as heart ailments, cancer, osteoporosis, depression, and cognitive decline.

When it comes to exercise, DHEA fosters tissue development and serves as a countermeasure against the inflammatory effects of cortisol. This function aids in minimizing discomfort post workouts and assists in the regeneration of muscle, cartilage, and bone. DHEA also plays a role in skin health by serving as a fundamental element for sebum (skin oil), which shields skin cells against UV and chemical carcinogens. Furthermore, DHEA boosts the formation of connective tissue and cartilage and enhances bone strength.

Dehydroepiandrosterone, known as DHEA, provides many physical and mental health benefits:

It is not possible to eat any particular foods to increase DHEA. DHEA supplementation is generally recommended for people 35 and up to maintain health.

DHEA levels over the human lifespan

From birth, DHEA levels gradually rise throughout childhood and teenage years, peaking between the ages of 20-25, when we are in physical and mental prime of life. Then levels decline by about 2% per year. So by age 35 we are producing 20% less than at age 25; and by age 50 we are making only half the DHEA we were producing at age 25. This decline continues for men and women alike to where levels may be just 10% of what they once were by the time we are in our 70s.

Time to Try Twist 25 DHEA cream

So now you understand what DHEA is and why past the age of 35 men and women need to try to maintain their DHEA levels to slow the gradual decline in hormones that happens to all of us, because hormone decline is positively associated to diseases of aging such as cardiovascular disease, frailty, and cognitive decline.

No matter what you eat or drink you cannot change your DHEA level with foods you eat. In fact, even DHEA supplement pills do very little to support DHEA levels. So if you are going to do something, do it right.  Twist 25 DHEA cream is the best method of use for DHEA. If you have any questions please feel free to call Health2Go and ask to speak with Hugh Woodward. Here to help.
