Maintain Health: It’s All the Little Things That Make a Big Difference Over Time

Medical research studies continue to confirm that maintaining health is far better than fixing health problems once they occur. Antonia Novello, M.D., the former US Surgeon General, summed it up well, saying “It is easier to maintain good health than it is to recover it.”

Medical research clearly shows that sleeping well, eating well, regular daily exercise, drinking adequate clean water, getting exposure to sunlight each day and maintaining nutrients and hormone levels allows better health. Dr. Greg Nobel, a primary care physician at Health First Physicians in Colorado gives three tips to stay healthy: Sleep right, eat more produce and exercise for 30 minutes or more 3-5 times per week.

Maintaining health is much better than waiting for a health problem to occur and trying to treat it.

Recurring behaviors or actions we do each day are what keep us healthy and happy over the long haul. These daily behaviors yield not only our health, but also allow us to better enjoy the pleasures of life as they happen. We do good things when we feel good because we are healthy.

Good health and happiness builds upon itself in a cycle of repeated daily habits we develop over time.

For most people, a decline in hormone levels begins to occur between the ages of 30-40. Hormones are the chemical messengers communicating to all the tissues in your body.

When we, as humans, are in our reproductive “prime” between the ages of 18 to 25, we enjoy optimal hormone levels. In our 20’s, people are typically “at their best” or “in the prime of life.” These are the years when men and women feel great, have lots of energy, easily maintain weight, desire and enjoy sex, sleep great at night and have a sharp clear mind to handle stress or frustrations with ease.

Unfortunately, after about age 25, the most abundant base pro-hormone in the body, DHEA, starts to decline at a rate of about 2% per year. This leads to a gradual decline in about 50 other smaller, more specific carbon chain hormones that the body makes with DHEA, like testosterone and estrogen. Unfortunately, as hormone levels decline in the body, hormone receptors on the surface of cells decline too, so it is not simply a matter of replenishing hormones once the decline has occurred. The hormone receptors on the cell walls that allow hormones to do what they do cannot easily be restored if hormones drop too low for too long.

The gradual decline of hormones begins to be felt noticeably in various ways after about age 35. Some of the most common things people notice is that they cannot sleep well anymore — they toss and turn at night and just don’t sleep soundly like they used to. They begin to have less energy and drive during the day, less focus, less sense of well-being. By age 50, males and females alike produce only half the hormones they did at age 25. Since hormones drive how we feel and function, the results are important in many ways.

As mentioned above, long term medical research clearly shows that deep sleep, regular daily exercise, and a good diet are crucial determinants of long-term health, happiness and well- being, but maintaining healthy levels of essential nutrients and hormone levels is likewise important to maintain good health.

Dr. John Woodward, Board certified OB-Gyn and bioidentical hormone replacement specialist, says “Keeping things at their best over the course of our lives keeps us healthy. Maintain good quality health habits each day: Eat right – give your body the nutrients it needs, exercise, water, sleep and bioidentical hormones. If people 35 and up apply a bioidentical DHEA skin cream each day, the body can make hormones it needs to function well to maintain health.“

Maintaining DHEA levels helps people to get deeper REM sleep at night. If people sleep well at night they awaken refreshed, rested and ready to go. If you start the day well rested, you have more energy, are in a better mood, and are thereby more focused and productive at work. With more energy and focus, people are more apt to exercise. When people exercise and are more active, they feel good, maintain muscle tone and lose weight. After a productive day and exercise, they sleep better at night.

The cycle repeats itself. Good deep sleep allows more energy, better mood. Exercise and productivity make you feel happier. You thereby eat less and exercise more so you lose unwanted weight. The repeated daily cycle is very powerful over time. Living a healthy lifestyle each day yields incredible benefits over time, and if hormone levels are maintained, combined with complete nutrition and hydration, the results are amazing – you feel better and look better. Keeping the body healthy averts falling into a downward health spiral that can result in greater risks of weight gain, insomnia, depression, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, cancer and more.

It is all the little things we do each day that make a huge difference in our health and appearance over time. If you are 35 or older, one of the best daily health tips is to use Twist 25 DHEA cream every morning and evening to allow your body to maintain youthful hormone levels; and as a result sleep well, wake up refreshed and energized and happy to be alive. Get lots of things done during the day with energy and a smile, exercise, get some sunshine (for vitamin D-3), eat healthy foods and drink good, clean water every day. Over time, all these healthy little things will allow you to maintain your best health and happiness.
