What is DHEA?
Let’s talk about DHEA, or dehydroepiandrosterone, to use its full name. This hormone precursor, or pro-hormone, can be thought of as the ‘building block’ for our bodies. It’s a large carbon chain molecule (19 carbon) that serves as a base foundation for the production of other, smaller molecules, known as hormones like testosterone and the estrogens. The adrenal glands, gonads, and dermis are in produce and process DHEA into what particular hormones the body needs.
DHEA was first isolated and identified in 1931 by Dr. Adolf Butenandt, who was awarded a Nobel Prize in Chemistry. DHEA is often called the “the mother of all hormones” or “the anti-aging hormone”, or “the fountain of youth hormone”. DHEA is the precursor for over 50 smaller more specific carbon chain molecules or hormones. It serves as a base foundation for all estrogenic and androgenic hormones. From birth, our bodies naturally produce DHEA. DHEA is not a hormone found in animals. DHEA only occurs in humans.
Interestingly, the production of DHEA increases year by year from birth until we reach about age 25, when levels are at their highest. between the ages of 18-35 we are making the most DHEA. Notice that these are the years when human beings are most physically and mentally fit. These are the years when nature calls, and couples have children. It makes sense. Following that, the levels of DHEA begin to drop approximately 2% per year.
#1 Is DHEA Safe?
What does DHEA do?
DHEA serves as a precursor to various hormones, which are essentially your body’s chemical couriers, ensuring it works like a well-oiled machine. Additionally, DHEA is a major player in bolstering your immune system. It accomplishes this by stimulating the action of natural killer (NK) cells. A deficiency in DHEA is often linked with several age-related illnesses, encompassing heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, melancholy, and dementia.
DHEA promotes tissue formation. So after exercise, DHEA counterbalances the inflammatory effects of cortisol. So it helps reduce soreness after workouts, and helps us to rebuild muscle, cartilage and bone. DHEA also serves as a base for sebum (skin oil), protecting skin cells from both UV and chemical carcinogens. In addition, DHEA stimulates formation of connective tissue and cartilage and improves bone strength.
Comprehensive Health Benefits of DHEA:
- Energy, focus and mental acuity
- Immune system
- Lean muscle tone
- Bone strength
- Cardiovascular health
- Libido and sexual performance
- Deep REM sleep
- Softer, more hydrated skin
DHEA reduces:
- Abdominal Fat
- Risk of Cancer
- Risk of Cardiovascular Disease
- Fatigue
- Depression
- Poor quality sleep
- Joint pain
- Muscle soreness
Why Consider DHEA Supplementation?
After age 25, our natural DHEA levels decline. Restoring those levels can have a profound impact on how we feel and function. DHEA helps us:
- Maintain Energy & Vitality: Supports the drive and energy needed to live life to the fullest.
- Stay Active & Healthy: Contributes to stronger bones, muscles, with healthier skin and less fat.
- Maintain cognitive function, visuospatial awareness and psychological well-being.
DHEA Dosage and Suggested use
So should someone 35 or older use Twist 25 DHEA cream every day?
DHEA for Exercise Results
DHEA supplementation enhances exercise performance. Professional and Olympic athletes are prohibited from using DHEA supplements because use would provide advantages in health and fitness.
So, as long as you are not competing in professional sports or competing in NCAA or Olympic events, you probably want a health advantage!
- Promotes cell formation for connective tissues such as muscle, cartilage and connective tissue, bone osteocytes as well as skin cells in the dermis, and neurons as well.
- Allows for healthier epithelial cells throughout the cardiovascular system and peripheral tissues.
- Is a base or precursor to 50 hormones as well as sebum that is a natural moisturizer for skin and hair.
- Counterbalances the inflammatory effects of cortisol. So, after workouts muscle recovery is improved while soreness is reduced DHEA allows formation of shapelier, toned muscle.
- Has been shown to reduce both subcutaneous and visceral abdominal fat because DHEA improves the ability to burn energy rather than storing it away as fat.
Beyond Athletic Benefits
DHEA is a crucial hormone precursor for male and female sex hormones that humans produce naturally from birth. Men and women make greater amounts of DHEA every year until about age 25 when levels are at their peak. This is also when humans are in reproductive prime, at their peak of physical health. After age 25, DHEA levels begin to decline at a rate of about 2% per year.
DHEA should be supplemented via proper method of use to yield noticeable benefits. Using DHEA correctly as a specially made skin cream yields more favorable benefits compared to DHEA in pill form which is far less effective. After regular daily use for 3 weeks one can actually feel noticeable benefits, whereas DHEA pills are far less effective.
People 35 years and older (who are not competing as a professional or Olympic athlete) should apply Twist 25 DHEA cream daily.
